We hope you are having a blessed, spiritually renewing Ramadan! For Ramadan we are raising our voices about issues we are passionate about. As Latino Muslims - a minority within a minority - we have been working to raise our voices and feel heard. Too often, Muslims and Latin Americans feel unheard and alienated in North America, but we have been working to change the narrative and find a peaceful place for our communities. From developing Spanish language educational material on Islam, to fighting against the distorted image of Muslims in the media, we know the value of speaking boldly and honestly on important issues - even when it feels like no one is listening! From humble beginnings, we are now blessed to be raising funds for a state-of-the-art Islamic Center in Houston. On top of being a Masjid, it will house a museum displaying the contributions of Latino Muslims throughout history. Alhamdulillah, if we speak truthfully and clearly enough, the message will eventually be heard.
Another issue we care about are those struggling throughout the Muslim and Latin American world with armed conflicts, injustice and global inequality - extinguishing futures for millions. Struggles across the world are similar and different at the same time, and as we raise our voices across the world we can begin to truly understand one another and find solutions. For underprivileged youth in North America, we have seen Islam with and social programs have made huge impact; turning away youth from cycles of gang violence and supporting them to have a positive impact and place in their community. We believe one of Islam’s strength is its diversity - Islam is a global religion, and stands to make just as much a positive impact in Latin America, as it has with our community here in the United States. With Muslims being so diverse, raising your voice with ours and sharing our message across your community has an immeasurable impact. Keep us in your thoughts this Ramadan, we surely will keep you in ours!
