Islam follows the lunar calendar, so every year Muslims look to the stars for the first showing of the crescent moon - then we know that our holiest month has begun. In this time we fast from dawn till dusk, reflecting on our blessings and privileges in life, and also those who go without. It is a time of spiritual reflection but also giving - through giving Zakat and Sadaqa Muslims become part of the solution to social problems, building communities and relieving needs where they arise.
IslamInSpanish has been working for 2 decades to bridge the gap between Latino and Muslim communities. Through youth engagement, we have seen the transformative power Islam has with the underprivileged and marginalized. We are passionate about connecting our rapidly growing community of Latino Muslims with the wider community, and sharing our unique history with others. There is no better time for building bridges than Ramadan, where we as Muslims become most conscious of being one amongst many: our Ummah.
If you would consider empowering us, we have many impactful programs from youth engagement to education. Right now we are raising funds to build an Islamic Art center in Houston. The center will include a Masjid, educational halls, Wudu areas, Da'wah lounge, multimedia production center, a playground and parking area, and a museum about the contributions of Latino Muslims, going back to Al Andalus - Muslim Spain! This center will bring our community together and foster a hub of positive spiritual and social action.
