“We’re just a big family”

In the spirits of our holy month of Ramadan, I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering at IslamInSpanish and participating at their weekly community Iftaar.

Last year on January 25th, I took my shahada at the IslamInSpanish location here in Houston, TX. About two months later, the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world changing our day-to-day routines. This meant that for many of us new Muslims, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience Ramadan at its best.

Last night, April 24, 2021, the IslamInSpanish Centro Islamico hosted a community Iftar allowing us to gather for the second time this Ramadan. Everyone comes in close to Maghrib to break our fasts, pray and enjoy our time together. The kids run around playing games and the adults catching up on quarantine life asking each other if we got Pfizer or Moderna.

For me as a new Muslim, I had an opportunity to finally experience Taraweeh with everyone, share my story with other people and most importantly  welcome the new Muslims, making them feel at home. After all, we’re just a big family.

I want to thank IslamInSpanish for creating this amazing opportunity for all Muslims to gather and enjoy time together, as well as the sponsors for making this happen.

Ramadan Kareem to everyone!
