IslamInSpanish partners with specific Houston Mosques to carry out our signature open house entitled “Islamic Roots in the Latino Culture.” This visual presentation takes anywhere between 1 to 1.5 hours and if focused on informing attendees in the Spanish language about their Latino Muslim Roots from Al Andalus (Muslim Spain) between the year 711 - 1492 when Muslims ruled Spain and lived in the peace and prosperity along with Jews and Christians. This is time we have modeled our IslamInSpanish Centro Islamico off of since it is a period in history where so many scientific discoveries have benefited civilization until modern times. Latinos are usually amazed to find out that over 3000 Spanish words are rooted from the Arabic language and that many of the historic cities in Latin America are built with the same designs built by Muslims in the early ages of Islam in the Iberian Peninsula around Portugal and Spain.
There are so many names of Latinos whose names are derived by Muslims throughout history and so many of our customs are found in Islamic practices from the way of life of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and even sayings or statements we as Latinos utilize in everyday life. All this information is shown in a visual and cultural context so that Latinos after being introduced to these commonalities can get rid of the misconception that Islam is the religion of the Arabs of Asians but instead is part of our unknown heritage. Once Latinos are introduced to this and then explained about the concept of God in Islam ALLAH and His universal perfect names and attributes, the last messenger sent to mankind “Muhammad”, and the Arabic explanation of the word “Islam” - this unique signature programs usually has led to at least 1 person accepting Islam each time it’s presented without our intent being to convert anyone but rather to inform.
This has led us to take this open house on the road throughout the United States as a signature program and we are grateful for all those who support and Donate for us to continue educating other Latinos who are eager to know about this information that we were not taught by our parents, schools, or historical references available as we were growing up.
